The Latest BPH Treatment
Benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH, is an enlarged prostate gland. The prostate gland surrounds the urethra, the tube that carries urine from the bladder out of the body. As the prostate gets bigger, it may squeeze or partly block the urethra. This often causes problems with urinating and can be a nuisance for many men. Rezūm is a new minimally invasive, in-office treatment option for those seeking to relieve lower urinary tract symptoms associated with BPH. The FDA approved Rezūm in 2015.
During each treatment, sterile water vapor, or steam, is released throughout the targeted prostate tissue. When the steam turns back into water, the cells are gently damaged, causing cell death.
Over time, the body’s natural healing response removes the dead cells and thus shrinks the prostate. With the extra tissue removed, the urethra opens, reducing BPH symptoms.
Most patients begin to experience symptom relief in as soon as two weeks with the majority of benefit occurring by three months. You can see symptom relief for up to two years.
Why Choose Rezūm?
Rezūm is perfect for patients who do not wish to take BPH medications but would like relief from their symptoms. It can relieve symptoms safely and effectively with noticeable improvement within two weeks. It also preserves erectile and urinary functions.
We perform the treatment in office at our First Hill location using oral sedation or local anesthesia (prostate block). The actual procedure takes about 15 minutes. You are discharged the same day and can return to regular activities within a few days.
Medicare and most private insurance cover the Rezūm treatment. Check your policy or call your insurance company to learn what they will cover. It is important to remember out-of-pocket costs may include a co-payment or deductible.
